Time to try foods!

May 1st, 2012 | Posted by ServingBaby in Articles - (1 Comments)

So at 4 and half months, Iris is showing interest in different foods. With her budding teeth, and having the ability to use her tongue to push things out, the doctor has let us know that we can start trying to introduce a variety of foods to her. Of course we will start out slow, gauge her interest and go from there. According to the doctor, because Iris enjoyed drinking her immunization medicine (there are those that are taken orally) she shows the ability to move beyond just ingesting milk, and the fact that she can support her head, as well as use her tongue are signs that she is ready.

To test the waters, sort to speak, was to introduce the concept of taste. So why not go full Korean/Mexican style and give her some good old 5 Alarm Chili Hot Sauce! At first my wife, was thinking it would not be a good idea, because it might be too hot, but I think for a first try, we should let her senses be overwhelmed for a sensation never to be forgotten. So we will see.

What do you know… She loves it!!

Just kidding, actually we let her try some grapes, and it appears she really does enjoy the taste of grapes. Our game plan for the introduction of foods will proceed at a modest pace. A few days later we will let her try some well pureed rice mixed with some milk (as per advice of our doctor) and every few days later will try something new. A word of caution, we only want to introduce one food at a time! This is especially important to ensure that if any food allergies exist, we will know to what. However, I am not too worried, for as far as I know there is none in either side of our family’s history… But its better to be safe than sorry (when it comes to your child’s safety).

As we prepared to visit America for vacation, one of our biggest worries was how will we take care of the baby on a 15 hour flight, in coach class at that. Fortunately we learned about something many airlines offer for newborns and young infants something called their “Bassinet Service” which is basically a makeshift bed for babies.

With our travel on United Airlines, we did indeed get the Bassinet Service, which we had to ask for ahead of time. See the thing is on their 747′s there are only so many places that can accommodate this service, so you need to make sure you plan for it well ahead of time. The nice thing is, with the location there is actually a lot of extra leg room, and in my opinion a whole lot more comfortable than your normal coach seating.

Some rules though; Can not use during take off or landing. If there is turbulence, have to take baby out of the bassinet until seat belt sign turns off. All in all it worked pretty well for Baby Iris Ji Eun. (Though, with the service, I still prefer Korean Air :p)

Another thing the Airline should give you is a infant life vest. Just in case of a water landing.

Baby Hair Lost

At 3 Months and Teething

Ji Eun Teething

Just 3 months old and already teething. You can see her first two teeth have begun to bud.

Oh My! Iris is just 3 months old now, and she is already teething. We were not expecting her first few teeth for at least a few more months. Some of our friends who also have babies are expressing their awe at how fast she is growing. It’s quite amazing too. We first noticed her teeth while we were in the United States, and it seems like one night they just appeared suddenly. Unfortunately we can tell she is having some discomfort at times as well. So, we have taken a few steps to help her through it.

Her grandparents insisted in getting a few products to help her get through this stage such as teething products and medicine. In fact we found many different things to choose from, and we also got a variety of tools for the different options. We invested in a teething ring, which is placed in the freezer and is suppose to be used as a chew toy I guess. However, as she is so young the ring wont fit in her mouth yet. Another item we got was some teething gel, that once applied should help ease the pain. Not exactly sure how effective it is, and also a little wary of hawking her up on medication so we use that sparingly and as a last resort.

But the true savior of them all is this very simple teething pacifier. It is shaped very much like the nipple of a baby bottle, and is hollow in a way to allow your finger to help massage the gums and budding teeth. This simple device is the most effective and easiest to use. Though, I must admit I’m not entirely sure what she is thinking, except perhaps that it is time to eat, thus no crying. In any case it works well, so we got two.

So now a days where ever we go, we are sure to bring along the pacifier and keep it close at hand. It is very convenient to have especially while we are in public places. As well as helping her pain, she finds sucking on the thing very soothing, and will sometimes fall asleep with it in her mouth. Its really an adorable sight to see.

I want to believe the reason she is growing so well and healthy is because of how well her mom is keeping up with a good diet and the prenatal medicines she has since kept taking once we knew she was pregnant. She is still taking the meds for good levels of vitamins and minerals to be in the breast milk as well.
